New Year, New Feet: How to Start the Year off with Healthy Foot Habits
Do you want to start the new year with healthier feet? Learn simple daily habits and exercises that keep your feet strong, comfortable, and ready for anything.

As we begin a new year, it’s the perfect time to focus on our overall health, including taking care of our feet. Our feet carry us through life, so they deserve some attention. If you’ve been neglecting your foot health or feel discomfort when you walk, now is the ideal moment to build healthy foot habits. Start the year right by giving your feet the care they need.

Eric Gilbertson, DPM, FACFAS, at Renew Foot & Ankle in Minnesota, can help you understand how to care for your feet this year.

Choose the right shoes

Your shoes play a crucial role in your foot health. If your shoes don’t fit properly or lack support, they can cause a variety of issues, from blisters to long-term conditions like arthritis. You can make a big difference by choosing shoes that fit well and support your feet. Look for shoes that offer good arch support, cushion your heels, and allow your toes to move freely.

Avoid shoes that are too tight, too loose, or too high. If you wear high heels, limit them to special occasions and ensure they fit comfortably. You can also rotate shoes regularly to prevent too much strain on any one pair.

Stretch your feet regularly

Just like the rest of your body, your feet need regular stretching. Stretching helps prevent injury, improve circulation, and ease tension.

You can stretch your feet by pointing and flexing your toes, stretching your calves, or using a foot roller or tennis ball to massage the soles. Doing these stretches daily, even for just a few minutes, can help keep your feet flexible and pain-free.

Practice good foot hygiene

Good foot hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy feet. When you neglect to clean and care for your feet, you increase your risk of infections, fungal infections, and painful conditions such as ingrown toenails.

Wash your feet daily with warm water and soap, and dry them thoroughly, especially between your toes. Regularly trim your toenails to avoid painful ingrown nails. You can also apply a good foot cream to keep your feet's skin soft and hydrated. If you notice cuts, blisters, or signs of infection, treat them quickly to avoid complications.

Wear the right socks

The socks you wear can significantly affect your foot comfort. When you wear cotton socks, moisture tends to accumulate, creating a perfect environment for blisters and fungal infections. Instead, choose socks made from moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic blends.

These socks keep your feet dry and reduce friction. It’s important to wear socks that fit correctly as well. Avoid socks that are too tight, as they can restrict circulation, or too loose, as they can cause rubbing. Remember to change your socks regularly, especially after being active.

Give your feet a break

Your feet carry you through each day, so they deserve regular breaks. Whether you’re standing all day or walking long distances, it’s essential to give your feet time to rest. When you’re sitting, try elevating your feet to reduce swelling and give your feet a break.

You can also treat your feet to a relaxing bath using warm water and Epsom salts. After a long day, applying a cold compress to swollen feet can help reduce discomfort and inflammation.

Address foot pain promptly

Chronic foot pain is not something to ignore. If you experience persistent or worsening foot pain, let Dr. Gilbert know. Foot pain can signal an underlying issue, and the sooner you address it, the easier it will be to prevent long-term problems.

Dr. Gilbert can help you identify the cause of your pain, recommend appropriate treatments, and offer solutions such as custom orthotics or targeted exercises. Don’t wait for the pain to worsen. Take action as soon as you notice discomfort.
